Dr. Gillman's research centers on midwifery practice assessment systems, particularly proficiency evaluation for pre-registration students, and clinical decision-making during labor to minimize perineal injury. Her work integrates pedagogical theory with clinical practice, focusing on threshold concepts in midwifery education and student preparation for practice assessments. She maintains active involvement in national standard-setting through assessment frameworks.
Her recent publications (2020-2024) demonstrate consistent focus on qualitative and mixed-methods research addressing critical gaps in midwifery practice. Key themes include intrapartum decision-making processes, quality improvement in obstetric care, and mental health assessment during pregnancy. These studies collectively advance evidence-based approaches to perineal trauma prevention, student assessment methodologies, and holistic maternal care protocols.
Dr. Gillman has secured significant Health Education England funding for national projects including the Pan London Midwifery Practice Assessment Document (MPLPAD) and the national Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement (MORA). As School Director of Learning and Teaching, she mentors students across BMid, MMid, and EdD programs while leading curriculum development initiatives that shape midwifery education standards across England and Northern Ireland.
She currently directs a multi-university collaborative team evaluating MORA implementation across England and Northern Ireland, coordinating researchers from multiple institutions in large-scale assessment of this national practice evaluation framework. This work represents one of the most significant contemporary initiatives in UK midwifery education standardization.
