Linda M. Waldron is a Professor in the Department of Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology at Christopher Newport University (CNU), and Director of the Center for Education Research and Policy. She also holds affiliations with the Center for Crime, Equity, and Justice Research and Policy and the Honors Program. Her research focuses on education inequality, youth violence, school discipline policies, bullying, media representation, and social media use among emerging adults. She earned a Ph.D. in Sociology from Syracuse University, alongside MA degrees in Sociology and Communication (TV/Radio/Film), and a BA in Sociology and Political Science from Bloomsburg University.
Dr. Waldron’s scholarship bridges sociology, media studies, and education, emphasizing qualitative methods. Her work explores how structural inequalities intersect with youth behavior, media consumption, and educational outcomes. Recent projects include analyses of cyberbullying, perceptions of career and technical education, and first-generation college student experiences. She has presented widely on topics such as mediated aggression and social media’s role in youth identity formation.
Her awards include the 2023 Contributions to the Discipline Award from the Society for the Study of Social Problems, CNU’s 15 Years of Service recognition (2020), and Excellence in Teaching accolades. She has secured grants from Dominion Energy, Newport News Shipyard, and the Southern Company Gas, among others, to study perceptions of career and technical education. Her research aims to inform equitable educational policies and youth development strategies.
Linda’s career includes prior work as a TV News Producer in Atlanta, informing her interdisciplinary approach to media’s societal impact. She advises students on navigating academic challenges and advocates for inclusive education reform through her directorship of CNU’s Center for Education Research and Policy.
