Linda Jane Goddard is a Professor and Director of Research in the School of Art History at the University of St Andrews. Her research focuses on 19th- and 20th-century French art and literature, with particular emphasis on artists' writings, especially by women. She holds a BA from Oxford University and MA/PhD from The Courtauld Institute of Art. Previously, she held fellowships at Churchill College, Cambridge, and The Courtauld, and was Head of the School of Art History (2019–2022).
Her major works include Savage Tales: The Writings of Paul Gauguin (2019) and Aesthetic Rivalries: Word and Image in France, 1880–1926 (2012). She has curated special journal issues on artists’ writings and is currently researching women artists’ life writings across periods. Teaching includes modules like 'Women Artists and Autobiography' and 'Symbolism, Decadence and Modernity'.
Recent research explores Gauguin's literary output, Picasso's poetry, and intersections between visual arts and literature. Awards include a 2014–15 fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) and a 2018 CASVA Senior Fellowship. She supervises PhD students in French art and literature, with completed advisee Maria Golovteeva (2023).
