Jane Dowson is an Honorary Reader at De Montfort University's School of Humanities and Performing Arts, specializing in twentieth-century and contemporary women's poetry, modernism, and postcolonial writing. She has supervised PhD and MA theses on trauma in literature, contemporary women’s fiction, and working-class autobiography. Her research includes archival work on Elizabeth Jennings and the confessional poetry genre, with a recent focus on poetry and medicine. She leads modules in Contemporary Poetry and Postcolonial Writing.
Her publications include the Cambridge Companion to Twentieth-Century British and Irish Women's Poetry (2010), A History of Twentieth-Century British Women’s Poetry (2005), and Women, Modernism and British Poetry 1910-39 (2002). Her work frequently examines intersections of gender, class, and literary form, particularly in British and Irish contexts.
Key research outputs include a 2010 chapter on interwar periodicals in the Oxford Critical and Cultural History of Modernist Magazines, as well as the 1996 anthology Women's Poetry of the 1930s. She co-founded the 'Women and Poetry in the 21st Century' network and collaborates internationally on projects like the Elizabeth Jennings digital archive.
Scientific awards include the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Teaching. She serves on the editorial board of Contemporary Women’s Writing and has acted as external examiner for Oxford Brookes University's MA in English Studies.
