Linda Brown is an Assistant Research Professor of Anthropology specializing in anthropological archaeology with a focus on the Maya region of Central America. Her research examines the archaeology of ritual, household practices, ethnoarchaeology, and the interaction between contemporary Maya communities and archaeological sites. She directs El Proyecto Arqueologías Indígenas in Guatemala and co-directs the Say Kah Archaeological Project in Belize, exploring topics like political hierarchy and ritual use of artifacts.
Dr. Brown holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Colorado at Boulder (2002), an M.A. from the University of Colorado at Denver (1996), and a B.F.A. in Fine Arts (1991). Though currently focused on research, she has taught courses such as Archaeology of Ritual and Religion, Ethics and Cultural Property, and Field Research in the New World.
Her research interests emphasize the interplay between ideology, resistance, and cultural landscapes in Mesoamerica. Her publications highlight themes like ritual practices, hunting sustainability, and digital methodologies in archaeology. She collaborates extensively with Indigenous communities to integrate contemporary perspectives into archaeological interpretation.
Key projects like Say Kah investigate household dynamics in Classic Maya secondary centers, while El Proyecto Arqueologías Indígenas explores how modern Maya practitioners engage with ancestral sites. Her work bridges past and present, emphasizing ethical engagement with descendant communities.
