Dr. Lin Yan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Iowa State University. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Utah (2022), and bachelor's and master's degrees from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Her research focuses on topological data analysis, visualization, computational topology, data mining, and machine learning, with interdisciplinary extensions into climate policy and environmental law. In 2024, her Ph.D. thesis earned the IEEE VGTC Visualization Doctoral Dissertation Award.
Her work bridges computational methods and real-world applications, emphasizing robust data compression, topological visualization techniques, and scientific data exploration. Recent projects include developing frameworks for preserving topology in error-bounded compression and analyzing atmospheric phenomena like tropical cyclones using physics-informed models. She also investigates climate resilience strategies, coastal adaptation policies, and land use reforms to address climate change impacts.
