Lin Liu

Lin Liu, Ph.D., FAPS, is a Regents Professor and Lundberg-Kienlen Endowed Chair in Biomedical Research at Oklahoma State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Physiological Sciences. He serves as Director of the Lung Diseases and Infection Laboratory, Founding Director of the Oklahoma Center for Respiratory and Infectious Diseases, and Founding Director of the Interdisciplinary Program in Regenerative Medicine at OSU.

Dr. Liu earned his B.S. from the University of Science and Technology of China (1984) and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (1989). He completed postdoctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center before joining East Carolina University as a faculty member, eventually moving to Oklahoma State University where he has held progressively senior positions since 2000.

His research program focuses on three interconnected areas: host-respiratory pathogen interactions (particularly with SARS-CoV-2, influenza virus, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis), the pathogenesis of pulmonary diseases including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and stem cell-based therapies for lung regeneration. His laboratory employs cutting-edge techniques including bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, CRISPR library screening, and tissue engineering to investigate molecular mechanisms of disease and develop novel therapeutics.

Analysis of Dr. Liu's recent publications reveals a strong focus on non-coding RNAs in host-pathogen interactions, particularly how microRNAs, circular RNAs, and long non-coding RNAs regulate immune responses to respiratory pathogens. His work spans from fundamental molecular mechanisms to translational applications, with significant emphasis on developing novel therapeutic approaches for respiratory infections and pulmonary fibrosis.

As Principal Investigator, Dr. Liu has secured over $48 million in research funding (as of December 2024) from federal agencies including NIH and USDA, foundations such as the American Heart Association and March of Dimes, and various local organizations. He has mentored numerous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, maintaining an active laboratory with multiple research tracks investigating respiratory diseases from multiple angles.

Dr. Liu leads the Lung Diseases and Infection Laboratory, which includes research faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students working collaboratively across multiple projects. Through the Oklahoma Center for Respiratory and Infectious Diseases, he coordinates research efforts across multiple departments and institutions to address critical challenges in respiratory health.
