Lin Bian is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Chicago, where she joined in 2021. Previously, she held the Evalyn Edwards Milman Assistant Professorship at Cornell University. Her educational background includes a B.S. in Psychology from Zhejiang University (China), a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and postdoctoral training at Stanford University. She leads the EAST Lab, focusing on social cognitive development.
Bian’s research explores how children develop reasoning about social categories, with dual emphases: (1) stereotypes’ impact on children’s interests and motivation, and (2) infants’ sociomoral expectations regarding fairness across group boundaries. Her work addresses societal issues like gender gaps in STEM and cross-cultural variations in social cognition. Notable contributions include demonstrating how stereotypes about intellectual ability emerge early and shape educational choices.
Her research has been published in high-impact journals such as Science and PNAS, with a focus on developmental psychology, social cognition, and gender studies. She investigates topics ranging from structural inequality to cultural differences in social hierarchy representation. Current projects examine interventions to counteract gender stereotypes and promote equitable educational engagement.
