Lily Chang is a historian specializing in late imperial and modern China, particularly the formation of legal measures related to the military during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). She is affiliated with the Department of History at University College London (UCL), where she serves as Chair of the BA Board of Examiners. Her research explores the role of jurisprudence in 20th-century China, using previously unstudied legal records to analyze wartime legal frameworks. Prior to UCL, she held the Henry Lumley Research Fellowship at Magdalene College, Cambridge (2011-2014).
Teaching focuses include modules like War, Rebellion and Social Discontent in Modern China and Untold Stories: Constructing Lives, Narratives, and Experiences in Wartime East Asia. She is also a Research Associate at the Centre for History and Economics, University of Cambridge.
