Professor Lillian Guerra is a historian specializing in Cuban and Caribbean studies, currently serving as a Professor of History at the University of Florida. She previously taught at Yale University and Bates College. Her research focuses on Cuban revolutionary history, Puerto Rican national identity, and the intersections of power, resistance, and cultural expression in Latin America.
Guerra holds significant academic accolades, including the prestigious Bryce Wood Book Award and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. She has authored five major books, including Visions of Power in Cuba and Heroes, Martyrs and Political Messiahs in Revolutionary Cuba.
In 2023, she launched a bilingual Cuban Studies website at UF, featuring scholarly interviews, archival materials, and photographic collections from her decades of research in Cuba. Her work bridges academia and public engagement, with contributions to outlets like the New York Times and Newsweek.
Guerra’s creative output includes Spanish-language poetry collections and short stories, alongside collaborative photographic projects like The Idea of Cuba with Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Alex Harris.
