Liesbeth Bolhuis is an Associate Professor and leader of the Behavioural Physiology research and education group at the Department of Adaptation Physiology, Wageningen University. She holds a MSc (1997) and PhD (2004) in Animal Science from Wageningen University, specializing in ethology and physiology. Her work focuses on the impact of environmental conditions, genetics, and early life experiences on animal welfare and behavior, particularly in pigs.
Education: MSc (Animal Science, Wageningen University, 1997), PhD (Pig Behavior and Physiology, Wageningen University, 2004).
Research interests include individual personality traits, early life environmental influences on behavior, social interactions, and feeding strategies. She coordinates large interdisciplinary projects, such as optimizing low-protein diets and improving pig resilience through housing and feeding innovations.
Publications: Over 150 peer-reviewed articles and 4 book chapters, emphasizing topics like tail-biting mitigation, social learning in pigs, and emotional expression.
Roles: Chair of the Dobberke Foundation for Comparative Psychology, supervisor of ~20 PhD/postdocs and over 120 MSc students. Active in disseminating research to stakeholders and the public.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Behavioural Physiology team, collaborating with groups like Adaptation Physiology, Animal Breeding, and Livestock Research.
