Liebrich Hiemstra is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specializing in Climate Change and Financial Regulation within the master’s program International Business Law: Climate Change and Corporations. She also serves as a Senior Legal Counsel at Vattenfall, advising on sustainability law and corporate strategy during the energy transition.
- Education: PhD in EU Supervision of Energy Derivative Trading (Tilburg University, 2023); Master of European Law (University of Groningen, 2007).
- Prior Roles: Attorney at law (2008–2013); Clerk at the Court of Justice of the European Union (2007–2008).
Her research focuses on the intersection of energy markets, sustainable finance, and corporate accountability. Key themes include ESG compliance, regulatory frameworks for energy trading, and the legal implications of market volatility. Her publications analyze EU energy derivative regulations and REMIT II’s impact on market manipulation oversight.
Hiemstra bridges academia and industry, contributing to policy discussions through her academic work and practical role at Vattenfall. She is also co-chair of the Energietafel at the Dutch Society for Company Lawyers (2024–present).
