Lida Oukaderova is an Associate Professor of Art History at Rice University, specializing in the history and theory of film with a focus on European and Russian cinema. Her research explores cinematic spatiality, Soviet urbanism, gender dynamics, and environmental representations in film.
- Education: Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Texas at Austin, Magister from Martin-Luther University, Halle, Germany.
Oukaderova's work spans critical analyses of Soviet cinematic movements, including her book The Cinema of the Soviet Thaw: Space, Materiality, Movement (2017) and forthcoming In Pursuit of the Common (2022). Her research engages with directors like Mikhail Kalatozov, Kira Muratova, and Andrei Zvyagintsev, examining intersections of ideology, urban planning, and artistic innovation.
Her recent publications analyze environmental themes in Thaw-era cinema, cinematic mobility, and Soviet panoramic film debates. Oukaderova also reviews works on postcolonial cinema, Arctic documentary practices, and transnational cultural geographies.
