Licia M. Hendriks

Licia M. Hendriks is an Associate Professor at The Citadel's Department of English, Fine Arts & Communications, specializing in African American Literature and critical race, class, and gender studies. She co-directs the collaborative M.A. in English program with the College of Charleston.

• Ph.D. and M.A. in English Language and Literature from University of Michigan
• B.A. in English from Duke University (with honors)

Her research investigates representations of Black identity in:

• Harlem Renaissance/Jazz Age Literature
• Racialism in American Fiction
• Feminist Issues in Literature
• 19th-20th Century Black Elite Culture
• African Diasporic Literature

Recent scholarship includes comparative analyses of Countée Cullen and Tracy K. Smith's poetics, with a focus on elegy traditions and contemporary racial discourse.
