Libertad Gills is a Lecturer in Film Studies – Videographic Criticism at the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies, University of Leeds, since 2025. Their work bridges filmmaking, research, and video essays, focusing on the reappropriation of archival images in experimental film.

Their research explores videographic criticism, experimental film practices, and the intersection of archival materials with contemporary storytelling. They are particularly interested in Latin American cinema, with a focus on Ecuadorian and Guayaquil film culture, as well as amateur and analogue film practices.
Gills has published in journals such as Short Film Studies, [in]Transition, and Tecmerin, and authored two books: La crítica es una escuela (2022) on Latin American film criticism and Guayaquil en ruinas (2023) on experimental film in Guayaquil. They also co-edited a special issue on Academic Filmmaking and contributed a chapter to Small(er) Cinemas of the Andes (2023).
Gills is actively involved in curatorial projects, including Rialécticas, ULTRACinema México, Berlin Critics’ Week, and a solo program for Cinemateca de Bogotá. They have presented research at international conferences such as the Orphans Film Symposium (2024) and AIM Conference (2024), and delivered a keynote on film collectives at the Winterthur International Short Film Festival in 2024.
