Libby Callaway is an Associate Professor working as a research stream lead across the Rehabilitation, Ageing and Independent Living (RAIL) Research Centre and Occupational Therapy Department in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University. She is a registered occupational therapist with 28 years of experience in neurological disability in Australia and the USA. In addition to her academic position at Monash, she serves as the director and principal of Neuroskills, a community-based occupational therapy practice, and holds leadership positions including Strategic Executive Advisor of ARATA Inc, Board Director of The Homer Hack, and former President of the Australian Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology Association (ARATA).
Dr. Callaway's educational background includes a PhD in Occupational Therapy (awarded July 1, 2020), a Master of Occupational Therapy from La Trobe University (awarded June 1, 2005), and a Bachelor of Applied Science (Occupational Therapy) from La Trobe University (awarded May 1995).
Her research focuses on disability, rehabilitation, ageing, housing, and technology, with particular emphasis on co-production with people with lived experience of disability. Dr. Callaway leads a national collaborative research program funded by State and Federal government that addresses critical issues in assistive technology, housing design, and workforce development. Her work contributes to multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health, wellbeing, and reducing inequalities. Analysis of her 101 research outputs shows consistent focus on practical applications of rehabilitation science, with increasing emphasis on co-design methodologies, assistive technology outcomes, and policy implementation in recent years.
Dr. Callaway has received multiple prestigious awards including the Certificate of Research Excellence (CORE) Award (2015), the Employment CoLab Excellence in Injury and Disability Management Award (2021), the FMNHS Dean's Award for Excellence in Industry Education Programs, the School of Primary & Allied Health Care Academic Excellence Team Award (2017), and the Vice-Chancellor's Education and Research Excellence Awards (2021).
As an active supervisor, Dr. Callaway mentors students through numerous projects including 'The experiences of people with intellectual disabilities employed in community cafes' and 'Australian occupational therapists' experiences of working as Behaviour Support Practitioners with NDIS participants.' She currently leads 9 active research projects through 2025-2026 with substantial funding from government bodies including the Department of Social Services and Monash University. Her work extends into policy development through government advisory roles and media engagement on critical disability support issues.
Dr. Callaway maintains strong connections with community organizations through her external positions with ARATA Inc, The Homer Hack, and her private practice Neuroskills, ensuring her research remains grounded in real-world challenges faced by people with disabilities.
