Lian Yeap

Lian Yeap is a Lecturer in Wildlife and Conservation Medicine at Murdoch University, affiliated with the School of Veterinary Medicine within the College of Environmental and Life Sciences. He has been teaching in the veterinary program since 2010, focusing on wildlife and conservation medicine units for undergraduate and postgraduate students. His roles include clinical veterinary support, coordinating field trips to Namibia, Tasmania, South Africa, and Thailand, and supervising HDR and postgraduate students.

Education includes a BVMS (Hons) and DVM from Murdoch University (1993–1996), followed by a PhD (2013–2022) on black cockatoo movement ecology. He is a Member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Veterinary Dentistry (2001).

Research focuses on conservation medicine, addressing disease threats to endangered species and ecological health. Key interests include wildlife health in ecological contexts, interdisciplinary collaboration for conservation, and the impact of human activities on species recovery. His work informs policy and management practices for biodiversity conservation.

Teaching responsibilities include co-coordinating Advanced Practice in Wildlife, Zoological and Conservation Medicine (VET645) and contributing to Primary Care, Unusual Pets and Wildlife (VET677). He established clinical rotations with Perth Zoo to enhance student training in wildlife medicine.

Advising includes co-supervising 5 PhD completions and currently guiding 2 PhD and 3 DVetMedSci students. Grants and projects involve national/international conservation initiatives. He is part of the Conservation Medicine Program and affiliated with the Centre for Terrestrial Ecosystem Science and Sustainability and the Harry Butler Institute.

Labs/teams include collaborations with Perth Zoo and interdisciplinary teams addressing wildlife conservation challenges. Future work continues to prioritize endangered species health, tracking methods, and conservation medicine applications.
