Liam McGuire is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Waterloo, where he serves as Biology 499 Coordinator and Associate Chair-Operations. He holds an adjunct position at Texas Tech University's Department of Biological Sciences. His research integrates physiological ecology, movement ecology, and thermal biology, with emphasis on bat migration, hibernation, and white-nose syndrome pathogenesis.
Education
- 2012: Ph.D. in Biology (Ecology and Evolution), University of Western Ontario, Canada
- 2005: B.Sc. in Biology, Carleton University, Canada
Research Focus
McGuire investigates how bats and birds navigate energetic challenges driven by environmental constraints. Key projects include:
- Comparative analyses of bat and bird migration, examining heterothermy, seasonal resource limitations, and landscape-scale movement patterns.
- Hibernation ecology and white-nose syndrome pathophysiology, focusing on interspecies variations and impacts of climate gradients.
- Human-wildlife conflicts, such as bat mortality at wind farms and Hendra virus spillover in Australia.
Honors and Awards
- 2018: Texas Tech Alumni Association New Faculty Award
- 2012: NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship
- 2012: Dr. John W. Arnold Fellowship
- 2010: Titley Electronics Award (NASBR)
Professional Service
McGuire chairs Finance/Policy Committees for the North American Society for Bat Research (NASBR), advises the Motus Wildlife Tracking System, and co-hosts the 2023 NASBR/International Bat Research Conference. He represents Biology on Waterloo's Science Endowment Fund.
