Professor Liam Maguire is the Pro Vice-Chancellor Research at Ulster University and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment since 2016. He obtained MEng and PhD degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Queen’s University Belfast and joined Ulster University as a lecturer in 1994, becoming a Professor of Computational Intelligence in 2007.
His research interests focus on data analytics, machine learning, and bio-inspired approaches, with applications in neural networks, healthcare, and semiconductor manufacturing. Recent work includes anomaly detection using convolutional autoencoders and modeling dementia progression with hidden Markov models.

Liam has established the Cognitive Analytics Research Laboratory (CARL) at Ulster and collaborates with colleagues from Queen’s University Belfast on AI initiatives in Northern Ireland. He contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals through his interdisciplinary research.
