Professor Liam Caffery is Professor of Telehealth and Deputy Director (Research) for the University of Queensland's Centre for Online Health. He holds multiple affiliations including Professorial Research Fellow at the Centre for Health Services Research, and Affiliate positions with the Centre for Health Services Research, Queensland Digital Health Centre, and Dermatology Research Centre, all within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences.
Liam Caffery has a PhD in Medicine and extensive research experience focused on pragmatic trials of telehealth services, with special interests in Indigenous health and rural health care delivery. His work spans telehealth service development, delivery and evaluation across numerous contexts, using implementation research principles to understand telehealth effectiveness from multidisciplinary perspectives including clinical effectiveness, patient perspectives, economic aspects, organizational factors, and socio-cultural considerations. He also maintains an active research agenda in health informatics, particularly imaging informatics for melanoma detection. His leadership roles include chairing the dermatology working group for the DICOM standards development organization and the technology standards working group for the International Skin Imaging Collaboration: Melanoma Project.
His research portfolio demonstrates strong focus on developing and evaluating telehealth implementations across diverse populations including Indigenous communities, rural populations, and specialized clinical areas like dermatology and palliative care. His recent publications reveal growing interest in digital health literacy, AI applications in healthcare, and comparative effectiveness of different telehealth modalities.

His current research funding includes projects on virtual health navigators, 3D skin imaging for melanoma detection, palliative care ECHO programs, and digital nutrition models for chronic kidney disease management in Northern Australia.
