Dr. Li Zhong is a Professor of Physiology at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP), Western University of Health Sciences. He joined the university in 2010 and has held academic ranks including Assistant Professor (2003–2007), Associate Professor (2010–2020), and his current role since 2020. His expertise spans physiology, biomedical sciences, and oncology.
Dr. Zhong earned a Ph.D. in Physiology from Wayne State University (1999), followed by postdoctoral training at Karmanos Cancer Institute. He holds an M.S. in Computer Science (Wayne State, 2000) and a B.S. in Biology from Hebei University (1985).
His research focuses on early cancer detection using autoantibody profiles as biomarkers. His team developed a screening technology achieving 91.3% sensitivity/specificity for stage I NSCLC and 82.6%/87.5% for occult NSCLC. He leads NIH-funded studies on biomarkers for lung and esophageal cancers, and has collaborated with organizations like British American Tobacco and Genetics Biotechnology Inc.
He has secured over $10M in grants, including NSF, NIH R01/R21, and VA Merit awards. His publications (15+ recent entries) span lung cancer biomarkers, mesenchymal stem cell therapies, and molecular mechanisms in cardiovascular diseases. He teaches courses in respiratory physiology, neuroscience physiology, and biotechnology.
Dr. Zhong’s work bridges basic science and clinical applications, emphasizing early cancer detection and novel therapeutic approaches. His lab collaborates globally, with presentations at AACR, EDRN, and international conferences.
