Li Qiao is a Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Their research focuses on the development of new technologies and the understanding of basic science in fuels & propellants, propulsion, and sustainable aviation.
Research interests include:
- Sustainable Aviation Fuels
- Propulsion Systems
- Fuels & Propellants
- Aerospace Engineering
- Renewable Energy Sources
Professor Qiao's work examines sustainable aviation fuel technologies derived from various sources including algae, agricultural waste, and genetically modified bacteria. Their research analyzes the technical, economic, and compatibility challenges of implementing sustainable fuels in existing aircraft systems, with particular attention to cost barriers and supply chain limitations. The research addresses how sustainable aviation fuels can reduce carbon emissions while maintaining compatibility with current aircraft infrastructure.
Professor Qiao has received research funding from Boeing (subcontract from FAA) and served as a visiting professor at Boeing in summer 2024, collaborating with aircraft manufacturers to ensure sustainable aviation fuels can be safely integrated into aircraft systems. Their recent work discusses the impact of the July 2025 federal spending law (the One Big Beautiful Bill Act) which significantly reduces funding for sustainable aviation fuel development.
