Dr. Leyla Sayfutdinova is a Senior Lecturer in Critical Area Studies at the University of Glasgow, specializing in Central and Eastern European Studies. She earned her PhD in Sociology from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Türkiye. Her research focuses on energy, post-socialist transition, urban change, and nationalism in Azerbaijan.
Her recent project Turning oil into stone, funded by the European Commission through Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions, explores the co-production of oil industry and urban space in Baku. Her work has been published in journals such as Journal of Eurasian Studies, Nationalities Papers, and Work, Employment and Society.
Her publications analyze themes like oil heritage, informal professionalism among engineers, welfare negotiation in post-Soviet Azerbaijan, and the role of ethnicity in national identity construction. She has presented on topics including Baku’s memorial landscape and urban continuity.
