Lewis Owen is the current Dean of the College of Sciences at North Carolina State University (since 2023) and holds a Professorship in the Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences. His academic journey includes leadership roles as Department Head at both NC State (2019–2023) and the University of Cincinnati (2008–2019). He has taught at prestigious institutions like the University of California, Riverside (2001–2008), and held early-career positions in the UK and Hong Kong.
Dr. Owen’s research focuses on Quaternary paleoenvironmental change, tectonic geomorphology, and natural hazards in active plate-margin regions such as the Himalayas, Andes, and Cordilleras. He directs two Quaternary geochronology laboratories and employs remote sensing, field methods, and cosmogenic nuclide dating in his work. His expertise spans glacial dynamics, landslide analysis, and fault system studies across multiple continents.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Geography and Geology from the University of Leicester (1988) and a B.Sc. in Geology from Imperial College, London (1985). Notable contributions include advancing understanding of Himalayan-Tibetan orogen dynamics and leading international collaborations on climate resilience in Pakistan.
Lewis Owen’s publications (15 most recent shown) explore themes like glacial chronology, landslide mechanics, and tectonic deformation. He actively engages in geohazard assessment and policy advocacy, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to environmental challenges.
