Lewis Davis is the Thomas Armstrong Professor of Economics at Union College, where he has been a faculty member since 2006 and served as Department Chair since September 2020. His research bridges economic growth, political economy, and the economics of culture, with a focus on how values, beliefs, and preferences shape economic and social outcomes.
- Education: BA in Mathematics from Davidson College (1988); PhD in Economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1999).
His work explores cultural transmission, individualism, patriarchy, and social status, often linking these to economic development and inequality. Recent studies examine gendered language, religious values, and the legal status of prostitution. He has co-authored papers with Union College students and colleagues, including research on campus health policies during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Lewis Davis has taught over 100 undergraduate students as a senior thesis advisor and developed courses such as the Economics of Sin, which analyzes ethically complex markets. His research has been supported by grants like the Rapaport Everyday Ethics Across the Curriculum Program and featured in media outlets including Bloomberg View, CNBC, and NPR's Academic Minute.
