Dr Lewis Bott is a Professor in the School of Psychology at Cardiff University. He holds a BSc in Mathematics and Psychology from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and a PhD in Psychology from the University of Warwick. His research focuses on psycholinguistics and linguistic pragmatics, particularly the processing of implications, scalar implicatures, and presuppositions. He applies this expertise to real-world challenges like reducing media exaggeration and improving public health communication through campaigns such as 'myth-busting' for flu vaccines.
- Education:
- BSc (Hons) Mathematics & Psychology, University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (1992-1995)
- MSc Cognitive Science, University of Birmingham (1995-1996)
- PhD Psychology, University of Warwick (1998-2001)
Dr Bott investigates how linguistic context and visual/auditory cues influence language interpretation. His work employs techniques like eyetracking and production tasks to model pragmatic processing. Key applied areas include reducing science media exaggeration via caveats and improving health communication strategies.
His research spans theoretical studies of implicature mechanisms and applied projects like evaluating health labeling in vending machines. He has held roles from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer and Reader at Cardiff, with prior postdoctoral research at New York University and the Institut des Sciences Cognitives in Lyon.
