Levon Barseghyan is the Robert Julius Thorne Professor of Economics at Cornell University, serving as Director of Graduate Studies for the Economics Field. He joined Cornell in 2003 after earning a PhD from Northwestern University, alongside earlier degrees from Yerevan State University, the American University of Armenia, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
His research focuses on
- Applied Microeconomics, particularly risk preferences and their stability across contexts
- Political Economy, including fiscal policy and institutional impacts on growth
- Public Finance, exploring taxation and public project financing
Recent work emphasizes risk preference heterogeneity, limited consideration in decision-making, and policy design in Tiebout models. His publications span top journals like the American Economic Review and Journal of Economic Theory.
Teaching includes graduate seminars (ECON 7850/7851) and specialized courses on risk/insurance (ECON 4600). His NSF-funded research addresses empirical risk preference estimation and behavioral economic modeling.
