Dr. Leslie Vermeer is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean at MacEwan University, affiliated with the Department of Arts and Cultural Management. She has been teaching at MacEwan since 2002, focusing on language, communication, and education.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD from the University of Alberta
- Master's degree in English
- Master's degree in Education
Dr. Vermeer's research centers on the intersection of language, power, and education. She investigates how language produces privilege and shapes students through education policy. Her current projects analyze representations of daughters and mothers in children's and young adult literature, and she explores micro-publishing within Alberta's political economy. Adopting an intersectionalist feminist framework, her work consistently asks "Who benefits?" from cultural and educational practices.
Her scholarly output spans publishing studies, educational policy, and gender analysis. Recent works address proofreading standards, Alberta's publishing resilience post-oil boom, and critical examinations of the English Language Arts curriculum. She also examines historical patterns in literary canons and social reproduction in education.
Dr. Vermeer is available to supervise senior students' independent studies. With over 25 years of professional experience as a writer, editor, and reviewer, she has edited approximately 200 books and authored "The Complete Canadian Book Editor" (2016). She serves on the board of NeWest Press and is a member of Editors Canada.
