Professor Swartz's research spans several interconnected areas focused on disability rights, mental health, and social justice. His work examines disability issues across multiple contexts including healthcare access, sexuality, cultural understandings of mental health, and international sport. He has received the Gold Medal for Science-for-Society from the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) for his contributions to applying scientific knowledge for societal benefit. His research methodology often employs interdisciplinary approaches that bridge psychology, anthropology, and social policy to address complex issues affecting people with disabilities, particularly in low-income contexts.
His recent publications reveal a consistent focus on identifying and addressing structural barriers that limit the rights and opportunities of people with disabilities. This includes examining attitudinal barriers in healthcare settings, cultural differences in understanding mental health conditions, and economic disparities in international disability sport. His work consistently demonstrates how policy intentions often diverge from lived experiences, particularly for marginalized populations.
