Yvette Hutchison is a Professor of Theatre and Performance at the University of Warwick, where she has been since 2006. She previously held academic positions at the Universities of Natal, Stellenbosch, and Western-Cape in South Africa. Her research focuses on African theatre and performance, particularly in post-apartheid South Africa, intercultural practices, and disability citizenship. She has led significant projects, including the Leverhulme-funded 'Performing Memory' and the AHRC-supported African Women Playwrights Network (AWPN).
Educated at the University of Stellenbosch (D.Phil., 1999), she specialized in African studies with a DAAD scholarship. Her teaching emphasizes non-Western performance forms, postcolonial contexts, and interdisciplinary approaches. She supervises PhD students globally, including studies on South African theatre, disability citizenship, and applied theatre methodologies.
Her research interests span memory and transitional justice, post-colonial theatre, and African womanisms. She co-edits the African Theatre series and serves on editorial boards for journals like Performing Ethos. Recent work explores disability through contemporary dance in Africa and global networks of African women creatives.
Awards include Honorary Membership in the African Theatre Association (2022). Key publications include South African Performance and Archives of Memory (2013) and edited volumes on African women playwrights and contemporary dance. She directs research initiatives and chairs committees on international collaboration and African studies at Warwick.
