Leslie Butler is a Professor of History and Vice Chair of the Department of History at Dartmouth College. She holds a B.A. from the University of Rochester and M.Phil and Ph.D. from Yale University. Her research focuses on 19th-century American intellectual and cultural history, particularly the intersections of democracy, gender, and transatlantic liberal reform. She has authored two major books, including Consistent Democracy (2023) and Critical Americans (2007), and is currently working on a project titled Travel Writers and the Social Scientific Imagination in Nineteenth-Century America. She teaches courses such as 'The History of Voting in America' and 'Gender and Power in American History.'
