Professor Leslie Burnett is a Visiting Scientist and Genetic Pathologist to the Clinical Immunology Research Consortium of Australasia (CIRCA) at Garvan Institute of Medical Research. He serves as Conjoint Professor in the School of Clinical Medicine at St Vincent’s Clinical Campus, UNSW Sydney, and Honorary Professor in Genomic Medicine at the Northern Clinical School, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney. Dr. Burnett is also a Consultant Pathologist in Genetic Pathology and Chemical Pathology (Clinical Chemistry).
He has pioneered groundbreaking initiatives in pathology and genetics, including Australia’s first Community Genetics program, founding Australasia’s first clinically accredited whole genome sequencing laboratory, and developing global pre-analytical quality assurance programs in pathology. His leadership extends to chairmanship roles in national and international pathology and genetics bodies.
Current research focuses on genetic pathology, genomics (specifically genomic population screening and AI-driven clinical genomic diagnosis), and computational biology (genomic regulation mechanisms). His work is supported by grants from the Allergy and Immunology Foundation of Australia, Medical Research Commercialisation Fund, and Medical Research Futures Fund.
