Lesley Smith is a Professor of Medieval Intellectual History and Fellow in Politics at Harris Manchester College, University of Oxford. She specializes in the study of the medieval Bible as both a physical and intellectual object, focusing on manuscripts, theology, and early university systems. Her research explores the interplay between medieval technology, intellectual environments, and Jewish-Christian scholarship.
Her research interests include medieval manuscripts, biblical exegesis, and the history of medieval universities. She has authored influential works such as Fragments of a World: William of Auvergne and His Medieval Life (2023) and The Glossa Ordinaria (2009), which investigate medieval biblical scholarship and manuscript culture.
Dr. Smith teaches medieval history modules at the undergraduate level and supervises DPhil and Masters students in medieval intellectual history, biblical studies, and theology. She currently mentors Antonio Marson Franchini in DPhil studies. Her work bridges manuscript analysis with broader historical and religious contexts, offering insights into medieval knowledge systems.
