Lesley Gilmer

Lesley Gilmer, PhD, is an Associate Professor and Director of Anatomy at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) within the College of Allied Health Professions. He holds a PhD in Anatomy and Neurobiology from the University of Kentucky (2009) and a Graduate Teaching Certificate in Anatomical Sciences Instruction. His research focuses on mitochondrial bioenergetics, the effects of injury and aging on mitochondria, and anatomical education methodologies. He has conducted postdoctoral work on mitochondrial dysfunction post-injury and completed a medical neuroanatomy residency at the University of Pikeville School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Gilmer’s research interests include cadaveric studies to document anatomical variations and pathological findings during dissection courses, as well as improving anatomical education through innovative approaches like recorded lectures and dissection videos. His work bridges clinical relevance and foundational anatomy for healthcare professionals.

Notable awards include the 2023 Student Champion Award (University of Louisville School of Medicine), 2015 Educator of the Year (Arizona School of Health Sciences), and 2014 Teacher of the Year (Arizona Student Government Association). His publications span mitochondrial dysfunction in traumatic brain injury (TBI), age-related changes in mitochondria, and cadaveric studies on osteoarthritis.

Dr. Gilmer’s contributions to anatomical education and TBI research underscore his commitment to advancing healthcare training and understanding neurotrauma mechanisms. His current address is at the Health Science Education Complex in Kearney, Nebraska.
