Leora Nanus is an Associate Professor of Geography and Environment at San Francisco State University (SFSU), affiliated with the School of the Environment within the College of Science and Engineering. She has been at SFSU since 2014 and serves as the Graduate Coordinator for the department. Her research focuses on hydrology, watershed biogeochemistry, resource management, and environmental modeling, with a strong emphasis on GIS applications.
Dr. Nanus holds a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Colorado Boulder, an M.S. in Geology from Western Washington University, and a B.S. in Earth Sciences from the University of California Santa Cruz. Her work integrates field studies, geospatial analysis, and collaborative frameworks to address pressing environmental challenges such as nitrogen deposition impacts, water quality management, and climate change adaptation.
Her research has produced over 20 peer-reviewed journal articles and reports, including studies on atmospheric nitrogen deposition in the Rocky Mountains, water quality in the San Francisco Bay, and disparities in community water compliance. She has advised numerous graduate students, many of whom have pursued careers in environmental science, policy, and geospatial technology.
Dr. Nanus collaborates with federal agencies like the National Park Service on projects such as environmental management of air quality in the Greater Yellowstone Area. Her teaching spans advanced courses in environmental management, hydrology, and watershed assessment, emphasizing hands-on field and analytical skills.
