Leora Auslander is the Arthur and Joann Rasmussen Professor in the Departments of Race, Diaspora, and Indigeneity and History at the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on nineteenth- and twentieth-century European social and cultural history with specializations in France and Germany, material culture, Jewish history, gender theory, and colonial studies.
Her research explores how everyday objects and practices intersect with political identities, examining how material culture becomes a site for expressing identity, dissent, and state intervention. Her work integrates phenomenological and feminist theories to connect everyday goods with broader societal structures.
Auslander teaches interdisciplinary courses including Problems in Gender Studies, Modern Jewish History, and Cultural Revolutions, incorporating transnational perspectives and material sources.
