Leonie Jackson is a Senior Lecturer in International Politics at Northumbria University, specializing in critical approaches to terrorism and counterterrorism. She joined Northumbria in 2020 after serving as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Huddersfield. Her research examines gendered and racialized identities in political discourse, focusing on topics such as the representation of women in extremist groups, Islamophobia, and far-right movements. A key focus is the intersection of gender, race, and security policies in national and local contexts.
Leonie holds a PhD in International Politics (2015) and has contributed to BBC Radio Four and The Yorkshire Post. She won the 2018 Political Studies Association's Sir Bernard Crick Prize for Outstanding Teaching and serves as an editor for Critical Studies on Terrorism. Her recent book What Is Counterterrorism For? (2024) critiques counterterrorism frameworks, while her 2021 publication The Monstrous and the Vulnerable: Framing British Jihadi Brides analyzes media and policy portrayals of women linked to ISIS.
Her research has addressed the British Prevent strategy, far-right ideologies, and the legacy of 9/11 in shaping security narratives. She supervises postgraduate research, including Joseph Pattison’s study on video games and counter-hegemony.
