Leonie Brassat is a Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (MPIL) and a Ph.D. candidate in Public International Law since March 2023. Her research focuses on the use of force in international law, military operations, and the protection of nationals abroad. She is affiliated with the MPIL's Max Planck Research Group SHADES (Shades of Illegality in International Peace and Security Law) until December 2024 and collaborates with Professor Anne Peters since January 2025.

- Academic stays at Columbia Law School (April-June 2025), Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (October-December 2024), and The Hague Academy of International Law (July 2024)
- Peer reviewer for the Journal of International Humanitarian Legal Studies
Her work intersects with international security, self-defense, and non-state actors. She has presented at major conferences, including the 33rd International Humanitarian Law Conference and the European Society of International Law’s Annual Conference. Brassat received doctoral and study scholarships from the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom.
