Leonid S. Levitov is a Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), affiliated with the Department of Physics and the School of Science. He is a leading figure in condensed matter theory, known for his pioneering work on quasicrystals, quantum transport, and graphene physics. His research interests span quantum noise, solid-state quantum computing, cold atoms, and topological materials.
Levitov earned his MA from the Moscow Physical-Technical Institute (1985) and his PhD from the Landau Institute (1989). He joined MIT in 1991, becoming a full professor in 1997. His notable contributions include the theory of quasicrystals via high-dimensional projections, the formulation of quantum noise counting statistics, and the prediction of levitons—coherent electron pulses observed in 2013. He has also contributed significantly to graphene research, including electron hydrodynamics and valleytronics.
Levitov’s awards include the Bose Research Fellowship (2018) and the Sloan Research Fellowship (1992). His work has been featured in numerous articles and reviews, highlighting his impact on understanding quantum phenomena and material properties.
