Leonid Medved

Leonid Medved, ScD, PhD is Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Maryland Baltimore School of Medicine (UMB SOM) and a member of the Center for Vascular and Inflammatory Diseases. His career spans four decades, beginning at the Institute of Biochemistry, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, where he rose to Head of the Department of Protein Structure and Function. Since 1997, he has held appointments in the United States at the American Red Cross J. Holland Laboratory, George Washington University, and the University of Maryland.

Research Interests:
Dr. Medved’s work is centered on the structure and function of blood coagulation and fibrinolytic proteins. Key themes include:

• Multidomain architecture of fibrinogen and the molecular mechanism of fibrin formation.
• Initiation of fibrinolysis and the role of fibrin(ogen) in leukocyte transmigration.
• Discovery of a novel fibrin-VLDL receptor-mediated pathway driving inflammation.
• Development of peptide and antibody antagonists targeting fibrin-dependent inflammatory pathways for cardiovascular therapeutics.

Scientific Awards:

• Outstanding Investigator Award – International Fibrinogen Research Society (IFRS)

Funding & Grants:
Since 1998 Dr. Medved has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health as a principal investigator. His current NIH/NHLBI R01 grant (HL056051) supports ongoing research on fibrin-dependent inflammatory mechanisms.

He conducts research within the UMB SOM Center for Vascular and Inflammatory Diseases, leading a multidisciplinary team focused on translational cardiovascular biology.
