Leonard W. J. van der Kuijp is a Professor of Tibetan and Himalayan Studies and Chair of the Committee on Inner Asian and Altaic Studies at Harvard University. He is affiliated with the Department of South Asian Studies and holds an academic appointment within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS). His research focuses on Indo-Tibetan Buddhist thought, Tibetan cultural history, and premodern political-religious dynamics between Tibet, China, and Mongolia. Van der Kuijp earned his Master's degree from the University of Saskatchewan and his doctorate from the University of Hamburg before joining Harvard in 1995.
His recent publications include Handbook of Tibetan Iconometry (2020) and a co-authored study on Buddhist epistemology with A. McKeown (2021). His work bridges art history, philosophy, and political history, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach. Van der Kuijp has been recognized with major awards, including the MacArthur Fellowship (1993), Guggenheim Fellowship (2016), and induction into the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (2018).
He co-founded the Buddhist Digital Resource Center (BDRC) in 1999 and has held administrative roles, including former chair of the Department of Sanskrit and Indian Studies. His research collaborations span institutions such as the Nepal Research Center and the Freie Universität Berlin.
