Leonard Treuren is a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Managerial Economics at KU Leuven, affiliated with the Department of Management, Strategy and Innovation within the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB). His work primarily focuses on industrial organization, with an emphasis on understanding market imperfections and the role of policy in addressing them.
Dr. Treuren's research interests span multiple areas in industrial organization, including:
- Market power in input markets and competition policy
- Horizontal agreements such as mergers and cartels
- Sustainability and competition law
- Wage markups and buyer power in intermediate input markets
- Spillovers from legal cooperation to non-competitive pricing
His methodological approach typically involves production-side structural approaches to observational data, complemented by laboratory experiments and theoretical work. Dr. Treuren has been involved in significant research projects including "Essays on industrial organization and innovation" (2024-2028) and "Mergers and the deteriorating position of employees" (2023-2025), where he serves as Promotor.
Dr. Treuren's publications reveal a strong focus on the intersection of competition policy, market power, and sustainability. His recent work has examined how cartel fines affect pricing behavior, spillovers from legal cooperation to non-competitive prices, and the potential and limitations of competition policy in achieving sustainability goals. His research demonstrates a consistent pattern of investigating how market imperfections manifest across different contexts and how policy interventions can address these issues.
Among his notable contributions are publications in the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Economics Letters, and the International Journal of Industrial Organization, as well as book chapters in edited volumes on competition law and sustainability.
Dr. Treuren serves in various governance roles within KU Leuven, including as:
