Leonard Sanderman is a Senior Lecturer at Leeds Conservatoire and affiliated with the University of York as a researcher and teacher. His research focuses on re-evaluating church music history through social, ethnographical, and feminist critical methodologies, supported by an AHRC studentship via the White Rose College of the Arts and Humanities. He holds a BA (Hons) in Music from the University of Oxford and a Master's degree from the University of York.
His specialisms include Critical Musicology, 19th Century Music, Sacred Music, Choral Conducting, and Organ Performance. Notably, he led an international team to transcribe and publish the complete sacred works of composer Alice Mary Smith, contributing significantly to the Dutch Hymnal of 2013. As a performer, he maintains an active career as an organist and choral conductor, with notable engagements including a 2019 residency in Germany and a New York recital at St Patrick’s Cathedral.
Leonard has been recognized as an Associate of the Royal College of Organists and has received critical acclaim for live performances on BBC3. His work bridges academic research, historical musicology, and contemporary performance practice.
