Steven Grahl is an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Oxford and Tutor in Music at Christ Church, Oxford since 2018. In 2024, he will assume the role of Director of Music at Trinity College, Cambridge. He concurrently serves as Conductor of Schola Cantorum of Oxford and Musical Director of Benson Choral Society. His roles include former Director of Music at Peterborough Cathedral (2014–2018), where he oversaw the choir and organ re-pitching project. Grahl is a prize-winning organist, holding top FRCO awards and the Worshipful Company of Musicians’ Silver Medallion. He has led major choral works, including Bach’s Magnificat, Verdi’s Requiem, and Handel’s Coronation Anthems.
Education: Magdalen College, Oxford and Royal Academy of Music. Awards: ARAM (2010), International Organ Competition finalist, and President of the Incorporated Association of Organists. His conducting engagements span ensembles like the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra and Guildford Philharmonic. He has recorded solo organ CDs and collaborated with groups such as Instruments of Time and Truth. Leadership roles include Chair of the Association of Assistant Cathedral Organists and Junior Fellowship at Birmingham Conservatoire.
Research interests focus on choral performance practice, Baroque organ repertoire, and historical instrument restoration. His work emphasizes collaboration between academic and liturgical music traditions. Upcoming projects include his tenure at Trinity College, Cambridge, and continued recordings with Schola Cantorum.
