معرفی
Leonard Ernst serves as a Research Fellow in the Department of Microbiology at Monash University, where his work bridges evolutionary biology and sustainable energy through ancestral enzyme reconstruction. He specializes in resurrecting ancient hydrogenases to decipher their evolutionary trajectory and enhance catalytic efficiency for hydrogen-based bioenergy systems.
His research spans Microbiology, Biochemistry, Enzymology, Evolutionary Biology, Bioenergy, and Hydrogen Catalysis, employing ancestral sequence reconstruction and biochemical resurrection techniques. This interdisciplinary approach aims to uncover fundamental enzyme evolution principles while engineering superior catalysts for renewable energy applications.
Ernst received dual recognition in March 2025 for his project on ancestral hydrogenases: a formal Prize (including medals and awards) and a Competitive Fellowship, highlighting the significance of his contributions to enzymology and bioenergy.
He currently leads two research initiatives as Primary Chief Investigator: Reconstructing ancestral hydrogenases to understand their evolutionary origin and improve hydrogen catalysis (active February–December 2025) and Ancestral reconstruction and biochemical resurrection of hydrogenases (scheduled January 2026–December 2028), both funded through competitive grant mechanisms.
