Leon Kochian is a Professor at the University of Saskatchewan's College of Agriculture and Bioresources, Department of Plant Sciences. He holds the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Global Food Security and serves as Associate Director of the Global Institute for Food Security. His research focuses on plant mineral nutrition, root system architecture, and abiotic stress tolerance in crops. Kochian earned a Ph.D. in Plant Physiology from UC Davis and a B.A. in Botany from UC Berkeley.
His work emphasizes three core areas: 1) improving nutrient and water uptake efficiency through root architecture optimization, 2) enhancing crop tolerance to acid soils via aluminum resistance and phosphorus efficiency mechanisms, and 3) advancing micronutrient biofortification while mitigating heavy metal contamination. Collaborations with institutions like Embrapa in Brazil and African breeders aim to translate discoveries into field-ready solutions.
Recent publications highlight innovations in root phenotyping technologies, molecular genetics of stress tolerance, and microbiome interactions with crop roots. His research bridges fundamental biology with applied breeding strategies to address global food security challenges.
Grants & Teams: Active in GIFS initiatives, leading interdisciplinary projects on crop resilience. Oversees a lab integrating genomic, physiological, and computational approaches to crop improvement.
