Leon Black serves as Professor of Infrastructure Materials at the University of Leeds, where he leads the Centre for Infrastructure Materials within UKCRIC (UK Collaboratorium for Research in Infrastructure and Cities). His work focuses on composition-microstructure-performance relationships in low-clinker binders, utilizing advanced analytical techniques to investigate cement and concrete degradation in aggressive environments.
With nearly 30 years of expertise as a surface analytical and materials chemist, Black specializes in low-carbon concrete deterioration mechanisms and infrastructure material stability. His research integrates materials chemistry with practical infrastructure applications, emphasizing sustainable construction solutions through composition-performance analysis. He also directs technical circularity research for mineral-based construction materials within the UKCRI Interdisciplinary Circular Economy Centre.
Black leads a major 4-year research initiative (2021-2025) involving UCL, Loughborough University, and over 40 industrial collaborators focused on circular economy solutions for construction materials. His editorial roles include Editor of Advances in Cement Research and Editorial Board membership for Cement and Concrete Research.
The Centre for Infrastructure Materials under his direction provides state-of-the-art characterization facilities for cement, concrete, metals, polymers, and biocomposites, featuring comprehensive capabilities for accelerated ageing studies across diverse material systems.
