Dr. Leo Westbury is a Lecturer at the University of Southampton's Faculty of Medicine, working within the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Centre since 2013. His academic background includes a degree in Mathematical Sciences from the University of Bath and an MSc in Statistics from the University of Warwick. He contributes significantly to both research and teaching across the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Social Sciences.
His research focuses on the lifecourse epidemiology of musculoskeletal ageing, employing advanced statistical methods to investigate determinants and health consequences of declining musculoskeletal health in older populations. His work spans multiple major cohort studies including the Hertfordshire Cohort Study, the 1946 British Birth Cohort, and the Global Longitudinal Study of Osteoporosis in Women.
Dr. Westbury's recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on aging research, musculoskeletal health, and epidemiological methods. His work frequently appears in high-impact journals including The Lancet and JCSM Rapid Communications, with a particular focus on multimorbidity, sarcopenia, bone health, and the application of machine learning techniques to medical imaging data.

As an educator, Dr. Westbury teaches Understanding Basic Statistics courses within the Foundations of Medicine program, co-leads the Statistical Genetics MSc module, and provides statistical support for medical students. He has supervised multiple PhD students including Thomas Alexander Cox and Gregorio Bevilacqua, along with five MSc projects in Statistics with Applications in Medicine. His current research includes the Southampton Longitudinal Study of Ageing, machine learning applications for medical imaging, and investigations into epigenetic age acceleration.
