Leo J. Fleishman is the William D. Williams Professor of Biological Sciences at Union College, affiliated with the Biology Department. His research focuses on sensory systems, environmental influences on animal communication, and visual ecology in anoline lizards. He teaches courses in biology, including Diversity of Life, Topics in Physiology, and Animal Behavior.
Education: B.A., Tufts University; Ph.D., Cornell University.
Research Interests: Fleishman investigates how color and motion perception interact with the physical properties of visual displays in lizards. His work emphasizes evolutionary adaptations in signal perception and ecological factors shaping communication. Recent studies explore chromatic contrast, light intensity effects, and dewlap signaling in Anolis species.
Publications: His research spans visual ecology, behavioral ecology, and evolutionary biology, with notable contributions to Animal Behaviour, Journal of Herpetology, and Journal of Experimental Biology. Themes include sensory processing, signal visibility, and visual acuity in lizard communication.
Grants & Support: Fleishman’s work benefits from NSF-funded equipment like micro-CT and 3D motion tracking systems, enhancing STEM research at Union College.
Student Mentorship: He has advised Union College students, including C.S. Wadman, K.J. Maximov, A.I. Yeo, and C.W. Perez, on collaborative research projects.
