Lenuta Giukin serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the State University of New York at Oswego, where she has taught since 2003. She previously chaired the department (2018-2021) and currently coordinates the French Program, having redesigned its curriculum and established online courses and a Cultural Studies track. A Fulbright Scholar (2013-2014), she founded the annual international Small Cinemas conference now in its 14th edition.
Her academic foundation includes a Ph.D. in French Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2002), an M.A. in French Literature from the University of Illinois at Chicago (1994), and a Master's in French & Romanian Languages & Literature from Romania's West University of Timisoara (1984). Her study abroad experience in Avignon enriched her cultural perspective.
Giukin's research traverses French and Francophone literature, cinema, and cultural studies with core expertise in gender representation, immigration narratives, and identity politics. She has pioneered scholarship on Romanian cinema's New Wave and small cinemas globally, examining how film reflects societal transformations in post-communist contexts. Her work bridges cinematic analysis with broader cultural studies, highlighting marginalized perspectives and local-global cinematic dynamics.
Analysis of her publications reveals sustained focus on Eastern European cinema (particularly Romanian and Moldovan), with increasing attention to sociopolitical themes like academic integrity, spiritual consciousness, and ideological critique. Her research consistently explores intersections of national identity, gender, and power within cinematic narratives across European and global contexts.
Her scientific recognition includes the Fulbright Scholarship.
- Fulbright Scholar (2013-2014)
As an educator, she has mentored students through curriculum development including the 'Global Cities: Paris' course with annual trips, established the MLL French Scholarship, and revived the French Honor Society. Her grant-funded initiatives include the COIL project for international online collaboration and Fulbright research in Moldova. The Small Cinemas conference she organizes has become a vital platform for global film scholarship, fostering international collaborations that produced edited volumes like 'Small Cinemas in Global Markets'.
She actively contributes to academic communities as former editor of the Romanian Studies Association of America's publications (2012-2021) and organizer of international conferences examining totalitarianism, neocolonialism, and cultural identity in cinema.
